Royal Blind Annual Report 2007
Because of you we see...............a difference
Welcome to this year's Annual Review: a year that has seen many significant and postive changes at Royal Blind. Our achievements this year include..
- Completing a £2.5m residential refurbishment of the Canaan Lane campus of the Royal Blind School
- Providing educational services for 31 councils,
- Developing a £100k sensory garden at The Royal Blind School.
- Producing 5 million sheets of large print and 6 million pages of Braille at The Scottish Braille Press where 50% of our workforce is disabled or visually impaired.
- The award of two prestigious care accolades presented by Scottish Care.
- Developing a Training Programme for the care of older people with a visual impairment.
Dedicated, professional services for those who are blind or visually impaired and who may also have very complex, multiple disabilities continue to be in demand. This is reflected at Braeside House which continually operates at full capacity and in our school roll which has remained constant, even though more and more children with disabilities are provided for in mainstream schools.
We support this movement and maintain that choice and the needs of the child must come first.
We remain confident that our provision of, and financial support for, a dedicated educational service for children and young people with visual impairment and other additional support needs is still essential.
The Scottish Braille Press enjoyed another successful year and is continuing to build its customer base. The operation of our three main services was achieved at a financial deficit of over £1M during 2006/07. However as a result of generous support from our donors and our investment income these costs were met and we achieved a small surplus for the year overall.
With over 200 years of history and heritage we are really proud of our achievements and the services we deliver to the community. Royal Charter status was awarded 1898 and this year we were delighted when His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester agreed to become our new Patron. We never forget that we are only able to provide our services thanks to the generosity and support of others and on behalf of Royal Blind I thank you all for your continued support.
