The Principal's Message
The Royal Blind School is a National Centre of Excellence in the education of children and young people who are blind or visually impaired (VI). We are proud of our long and distinguished history and we look forward to a future in which we can continue to expand and improve the services we offer to children and young people who are blind or visually impaired, including those who have multiple disabilities and visual impairment (MDVI). The school is a Grant Aided Special School. This emphasises its importance as a high quality provider of education and care for pupils with VI.
We believe our pupils have the right to achieve a range of learning outcomes including academic, vocational, social, communication and independent living skills. The school provides high standards of education and care for our pupils at all times. We want our children and young people to have a range of opportunities and experiences which will enable them to become successful learners, responsible citizens, confident individuals and effective contributors to society. Achieving this requires genuine academic opportunity and choice. Pupils’ programmes are fully individualised to deliver teaching and learning that is accessible, relevant and motivating in a safe, yet challenging, environment.
Ours is a truly comprehensive school community in which pupils are fully included as valued members. We seek to enable our children and young people to maximize their potential and to fully participate in society. To achieve this, we are committed to the ongoing provision of resources and well-trained staff. By providing a diverse curriculum and range of activities focused on attainment and achievement we help our children and young people to develop skills which equip them for life in a rapidly changing society.
Our multi-disciplinary team of professionals includes teachers, care staff, mobility staff, nurses, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists and occupational therapists. Their work is supplemented by support staff as well as administrative and domestic staff. Together with the pupils themselves and their families, all have an important part to play in building the school community as an inclusive, supportive and effective learning environment.
In partnership with local authorities the school implements flexible and responsive programmes of intervention that support pupils with VI and MDVI both at the Royal Blind School and through Outreach programmes, staff training and consultative services. The school plays an important part in the national and international development of services for children and young people with visual impairment and works closely with universities, local authorities, Scottish government and other service providers to ensure an effective range of high quality services is available to children and young people and their families.
We hope you will find this website interesting and informative. If you require more information please feel free to contact us and request a visit should you wish to do so.
