Inspection of Additional Support Needs Provision
A Report by HM Inspectorate of Education and the Care Commission

The Report of a recent inspection by HMIE and the Care Commission was publicly released on 11 May 2010. The report describes the school and its strengths and summarises information about many areas of the school, its pupils and its staff.

We are proud to have received a consistent evaluation of ‘Very Good’ across all 5 quality indicators:
• Improvements in performance
• Learners’ experiences
• Meeting Learning needs
• The Curriculum
• Improvement through Self Evaluation

The Report can be viewed in the Download section at the foot of this page, and it is also available electronically on HMIe’s website www.hmie.gov.uk.  Here you can find additional detail such as information about questionnaire returns, which helped to inform the Inspection Team’s report.

We see our role as being able to provide excellent education for children and young people with visual impairment. We believe it is necessary for children, young people with visual impairment and/or MDVI, and their families, to have access to a range of flexible service models that are responsive to their diverse and changing needs. The Royal Blind School has a very important role to play in the continuum of available services.

Although the school has been described as a Centre of Excellence, we believe that excellence is a journey, not a destination and we continually strive to reflect on our practice and improve on what we do, to ensure our pupils are provided with excellent levels of support, care and education.

We look forward to a vibrant future in which we continue to improve the lives of children and young people who are visually impaired through education, care and support services.
