Canaan Lane Campus

The Canaan Lane Campus of the Royal Blind School is a purpose built educational and residential facility for children and young adults with multiple disabilities in addition to their visual impairments (MDVI).

Campus

The facilities include a purpose built school for pupils up to 19 years of age. We have 54 places in school and residential facilities in six purpose built houses. Canaan Lane Campus offers small classes with a high staff to pupil ratio.

The curriculum has been extensively elaborated to take account of the additional support needs of individuals arising from multiple disabilities and visual impairments (MDVI). Each pupil has the opportunity to be part of the Leavers’ Programme with an adapted curriculum to facilitate transition to adult placements.

We have been instrumental in the development of innovative teaching methods, including supporting the early communication development of pupils with a visual impairment using the adapted tactile signing system known as Canaan/ Barrie.

Members of our teaching staff deliver courses on MDVI education in-house, nationally and internationally.

Residential
There are six purpose built houses mainly for pupils attending Canaan Lane Campus. One of the houses provides six 52-week residential places. We have one house that provides rolling respite beds for 52 weeks in the year. The other four houses each provide term time places. Residents have access to therapists for support and advice and nursing staff at all times. We actively develop individualised care and action plans for all young people. We have a positive ethos of 24 hour curriculum and care, across our residential houses and school.
