Independent Living

Independent Living

It is the goal of the Royal Blind School to enable all young people to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors to society.

Independence
Throughout their education and particularly during the secondary stage, all pupils are helped to develop skills for independent living. To broaden the learning which takes place within the classroom, teachers run a variety of educational enterprise activities. The Cafe is a cooperative work experience venture located in the Lodge House at the Craigmillar Park Campus. Teachers utilise the wide range of opportunities in the local community to enhance pupils’ learning experiences.

Additionally there are specific educational excursions arranged by teachers to enhance classroom learning in a variety of curriculum contexts.

Mobility
Mobility training aims to help pupils develop the skills and techniques to move around in a variety of environments, independently, safely and confidently.

The mobility curriculum provides each pupil with a broad range of experiences and encourages the development of skills that allow them to learn from these experiences. Exploration, on a very practical level, helps them learn about the world and how it works.

The majority of pupils have an on-going and tailored mobility programme. Training is offered in short blocks or continuously - dependent on individual needs. Mobility independence is encouraged and promoted through our colour pass system. The Royal Blind School provides education in an environment where pupils and staff are valued both collectively and as individual citizens.

Transition to Adulthood /Work Experience
In the secondary department the fourth, fifth and sixth year pupils are given a range of work experience activities to provide them with an insight into the world of work. At our Craigmillar Park Campus there is a walled garden in a small, manageable, quiet area within the school grounds. It is maintained by the pupils with help from staff and is used to access a wide range of skills including decision making, team work and problem solving. This will enable some pupils to achieve Scottish National Qualifications in Managing Environmental Resources.

At Canaan Lane Campus transition programmes are an integral part of ongoing theme work. Students are cared for by experienced care staff who work together with teachers and therapists to ensure continuity of quality of life and good child care practice.
