Individual Needs

Individual Needs

All pupils are given appropriate support to access their entitlement to an individualised and differentiated curriculum.

Braille and ICT
At primary level Braille is taught as required to pupils who are not print users. For Braille users at the secondary level, Braille teaching continues, with additional support for specific skills and late starters. The school has up-to-date technology, which includes computers in each classroom with special programmes and peripherals (switches and special keyboards). Support is provided by visual impairment specific ICT subject teaching. This allows all pupils to gain skills.

Low Vision
The teaching philosophy employed at the school is based on the understanding that low vision creates unique educational needs. Vision is the primary sense for learning and consequently the sense on which most traditional educational programmes are based. Where a pupil uses a low vision aid, it is reviewed on a regular basis by a visiting optometrist.
Training is also given on the use of the low vision aids supplied.

Assessment and Outreach
We deliver a high quality service which meets the individual pupil’s and resident’s needs. These are identified through initial and ongoing assessment and consultation with the young people and their parents. Following admission to the school a comprehensive baseline assessment is made of new pupils’ developmental and educational needs within their first year. In partnership with local authorities the school provides an outreach service to visually impaired pupils within their local education setting. School staff are available to undertake functional assessments for these pupils. The assessment can take place in the young person’s home area or he/she may be invited to come to the school for a day or two. Assessment can be provided across the full range of the curriculum. The Royal Blind School takes pride in its happy, caring and stimulating environment which helps students realise their full potential.
