Curriculum
At the Royal Blind School we work together to enable all pupils to become:
- successful learners;
- confident individuals;
- effective contributors; and
- responsible citizens.
We seek to provide a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum. ‘Curriculum’ means the full range of learning opportunities provided within and beyond the school and includes both formal and informal learning opportunities.
When we develop our curriculum we take into account national curriculum guidelines but make sure that (where required) they are adapted to meet the needs of each pupil.
We are committed to the development of a high quality 24 hour curriculum which takes into account each pupil’s strengths, interests and needs. Delivering the 24 hour curriculum involves care and education staff working closely together to ensure that a child’s learning and support needs are effectively met.
At Canaan Lane the curriculum is extensively elaborated to take account of the significant barriers to learning caused by the pupils’ visual and additional impairments. Over the years, Canaan Lane has been instrumental in the development of innovative teaching methods for children and young people with multiple disabilities and VI.
We are currently introducing the Curriculum for Excellence. This is built on seven principles which aim to ensure that all children and young people achieve to their full potential, experience a broad and balanced range of learning experiences and have their individual learning and support needs met.
