About Us

The Scottish Braille Press is part of The Royal Blind School (Reg. Charity No. SC017167) which is a non-profit making organisation. Formed in 1891 as a department of the Royal Blind School, the Scottish Braille Press has grown to become one of the United Kingdom's leading providers of information in alternative formats.

Meeting Room

The Press was originally formed with the twin objectives of supplying Braille and providing employment for the visually impaired. We continue to meet those objectives and publish and produce a range of magazines and books which are sold to our blind subscribers at the price of the original print copy. We also continue to provide employment with around one third of our employees being visually impaired and another third being disabled. We are one of the largest providers of alternative formats in the country and are renowned for our professionalism and for the quality of our output, combined with a fast turnaround. We have a skilled and knowledgeable staff with considerable experience of both the alternative format sector and the commercial print sector. This blend of experience and skills combined with our continuous investment in technology gives us the ability to offer the service that you require.

We have a wide customer base which includes many blue chip clients and we continue to work closely with them operating within agreed service levels and providing advice, and the benefit of our experience to these clients. As many of our employees are themselves visually impaired we have immediate access to end-users and can provide feedback to our clients on their products and services.

As an acknowledgment of our experience and standing within the alternative format sector the Scottish Braille Press provides two representatives to the Braille Authority of the United Kingdom (BAUK). This is the Braille standards setting body for the UK. It liaises internationally on Braille standards and development with similar bodies in other countries. Additionally, the Scottish Braille Press is a member of the United Kingdom Association of Braille Producers (UKABP) and the Confederation of Transcribed Information Services (COTIS).

The Scottish Braille Press welcomes the opportunity to discuss your requirements. We are happy to offer advice and to talk through the range of options available to you. If you would like to contact us please telephone our Sales Department on 0131 662 4445 or email us at info.sbp@royalblind.org
