John Donaldson – General Manager
John joined the Scottish Braille Press in 2002 as General
Manager. His previous experience was in the commercial print
sector starting in the early
eighties with a
small
Scottish printer before going on to work for some of the
UK’s largest printers in a variety of management roles.
He graduated in 2001 with an MBA from the University of
Edinburgh.
John Crail – Production Manager
John moved to the Scottish Braille Press in 2002. John
has enjoyed a lengthy career in the print industry joining
Scotland’s largest independent printer straight from school
in 1966. During his career he has held a number of senior
management positions covering the production, purchasing
and commercial areas of the business.
David Moodie – Braille Supervisor
A former pupil at the Royal Blind School, David joined the
Scottish Braille Press in 1970 as a trainee Braille transcriber.
Promoted to Braille Supervisor in 1982, David is responsible
for proofing, editing and Braille training. David represented
the Press on the Braille Authority of the United Kingdom
(BAUK) for 18 years.
John Howie – Production Supervisor
John was a pupil at the Royal Blind School where he studied
Braille for a number of years. He joined the Scottish Braille
Press in 1964 working in the Pressroom initially before
moving on to become a Braille transcriber. He subsequently
returned to the Pressroom and was promoted to Production
Supervisor in 1989.
Jimmy Milliken – Production Supervisor
Jimmy joined the Scottish Braille Press in 1965 upon leaving
the Royal Blind School. He first worked in the Bindery as a
bookbinder before progressing to a new position in the
Pressroom. Jimmy became Production Supervisor of the
Magazine section in 1981.
Gary Davidson – Production IT Manager
On leaving school in 1985 Gary began his career in IT
working in the financial sector. He then progressed into a
variety of managerial roles in the financial and printing
industries before joining the Scottish Braille Press in 1997.
Janet Bartholomew – Senior Braille Proof-Reader
A former pupil of the Royal Blind School Janet worked for a number of years as an audio typist in both London and Edinburgh . She started with the Scottish Braille Press in 1991 as a transcriber before taking on the position of Braille proof-reader. Janet took on the role of Senior Braille proof-reader in 2003.
Richie Gunn – Origination Department Supervisor
Richie previously had experience in the Financial and Utility
sectors before joining the Scottish Braille Press. He initially
joined as a transcriber but with his background in IT he was
also ideally suited to a general IT support role. In 2004 Richie
was promoted to the role of Origination Department
Supervisor.
Alan Balfour – Head Braillist
Alan studied at the Royal Blind School before leaving at the
age of 18. He has been a Braille reader from the age of five.
He joined the Scottish Braille Press in 1969 and held positions
as a transcriber and a proof-reader before taking on the role
of Head Braillist. Alan is also the Senior Editor at the Scottish
Braille Press.
Sandra Coia - Senior Large Print Proof-Reader
Sandra worked in mental health nursing and community care for over thirty years before taking an IT course and relocating to Edinburgh . She joined the Scottish Braille Press in 2000 as a transcriber before moving into large print proofing. Sandra was appointed Senior Large Print proof reader in 2003.
