Introducing our new Linburn Centre & Outreach Services

Scottish War Blinded provides assistance to adults who have been members of the armed forces and now have a visual impairment. We have two criteria for membership. The first is people who have been members of the armed forces and are now blind or partially sighted, not necessarily as a direct result of service in the forces. The second is people who receive a war pension (or AFCS) for visual impairment or those who receive compensation from the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme.
The award winning new Linburn Centre is based in Wilkieston, West Lothian and was officially opened by HRH The Duke of Gloucester on the 1st June 2011. It incorporates a wide range of facilities to equip members with the skills and opportunities they require to maintain and improve the quality of their life. It is a center of activity and socialisation for members within the local area, but is also ideal for occasional short course use for members from further afield.
The new purpose built centre can accommodate up to 35 members daily and there is a wide range of leisure and social activities available. These include arts, IT, crafts such as woodwork and metalwork, daily living skills, a gym, a relaxation room and also training opportunities for members.

Who Can We Help?
Any veteran, resident in Scotland who has served in the Armed Forces of the United Kingdom, including National Service and Territorial Army is eligible to join us and use our services. This also applies to members of the Merchant Navy and Nursing Services who have been in active service and veterans of Scottish Regiments wherever they live now.

Outreach Service
As part of our new development, Scottish War Blinded also offers an Outreach Service. The Outreach Worker can make an assessment of your needs and can help to identify and meet your needs through a personal support plan. Outreach workers provide support to our members and are a one-stop contact point for dealing with statutory and voluntary agencies, and offering assistance with benefits and daily living skills.

Rehabilitation Officer
Our qualified officer for the visually impaired provides training to help people to adjust to their sight loss. One to one sessions and small groups encourage people to learn in a safe and friendly environment.

Member Services

Contact is maintained with our members throughout Scotland by our Member Support Workers. Our service offers assistance and advice to members throughout Scotland and includes financial support, particularly in times of difficulty.

Need a break?
The center also has a holiday home on the Linburn Estate where members can stay for a nominal fee. The home is situated on the edge of Linburn Park in the country surroundings of Wilkieston which is perfect for getting a break from the city but also for being closer to the facilities at the Linburn Centre. You can read more about the holiday home here.
