Activities at the Centre
The centre provides a forum for social interaction and an opportunity to exchange ideas, knowledge and experience which encourages members to test their own capabilities. Members are actively involved in choosing the activities they follow and for making suggestions for alternatives which can help to build morale and boost confidence and self esteem
Information and Advocacy
The centre is the focal point for all members/carers/families from where they can access information (either in person or by telephone) on a range of topics and issues including eye conditions, treatments, welfare benefits, housing and adaptations along with support where necessary, and/or signposting to other relevant services. Centre staff will advocate on their behalf if/when required.
Arts and Crafts
The Linburn Centre benefits from a well equipped craft workshop which is often used for wood work and metal work. An art tutor visits the centre on a weekly basis and holds classes that are specifically catered towards individuals with a visual impairment.
Independent Living Skills
Staff at the centre can offer life-skills training to help manage the essentials of daily living including hygiene and household tasks such as laundry. Cookery classes are held on a regular basis at the centre and steadily progress to improve knowledge and ability. Baking is another popular activity which provides a great opportunity for members to share their culinary skills in a safe and supportive environment.
Information Technology Room
Computers are an invaluable tool in helping to level the playing field for people with a visual impairment. A wide range of computer based software is available at the centre including JAWS and MAGIC. Computer skills can open up career opportunities or provide the springboard for further learning and enjoyment which can be facilitated by our centre staff.

Members can enjoy full use of the gym facilities at the centre which includes an exercise bike, treadmill and a hand crank machine. Our qualified instructor can set up safe training programmes for you using these and other equipment which we have at the centre. Light exercise sessions such as ‘armchair exercises’ are also promoted within the centre which are designed to aid mobility.
Social Activities
Many members attend on a regular basis centre simply to maintain social relationships and to enjoy communicating with others. The centre boasts a games room featuring a pool table whilst the main hub area is another popular location for gaming. Reminiscence groups also take place which give members a chance to reflect on fond memories by looking at nostalgic artifacts such as music or photographs.
Community Activities
The Centre actively encourages the use of facilities in the community and supports centre members who wish, for example, to go fishing, or play golf. Recent examples of activities being held outside of the centre include power boating sessions at Port Edgar, and weekly swimming sessions.
