The Linburn Centre

The staff based at the Linburn Centre will deliver a person-centred service in providing support to our members taking part in a range of activities. The unique qualities of the individual as determined by their life history and experiences, likes and dislikes will be discussed with their allocated Centre staff member who will assist members to identify their individual aspirations and goals. From this a list of activities will be developed.

Activities

The range of activities we will provide from the new facility will do more than offer opportunities to pursue a hobby or interest; they will provide a forum for social interaction and an exchange of ideas, knowledge and experience which will encourage our members to test their own capabilities. The challenges members will overcome and the enjoyment gained in learning a new skill, or taking up a hobby, will build up morale and boost confidence and self esteem. Members will be actively involved in choosing the activities they follow and for making suggestions for alternatives.

Arts and Crafts

A comprehensively equipped Craft workshop with all the necessary equipment for wood-work, metal work, wire work, pottery and ceramics will be incorporated into the Arts & Crafts Suite. Learning a new craft can be immensely satisfying and gives a real sense of achievement. We will also offer a wide variety of other crafts including painting/drawing/tactile art, chair caning, weaving, mosaics and paper mache.

Information Technology Room

Computers are an invaluable tool in helping to level the playing field for people with a visual impairment. Our training sessions will teach skills, including the use of special tools to enable word processing, data entry, use of internet and more. A wide range of computer based software is available including JAWS and MAGIC. Computer skills can open up career opportunities or provide the springboard for further learning and enjoyment which will be facilitated by our centre staff.

Physical Activities

A well equipped gym area with exercise bikes, rowing machines, treadmills and gentle exercise classes including Tai-Chi and low impact aerobics will be organised which will allow for safe supervised, enjoyable exercise at a level pitched to the individual. Other physical activities are expected to include walking/rambling and swimming.

Social Activities

Activities which have been suggested for the centre include a theatre group, a gardening club, outings, discussion groups, yoga and relaxation classes, cookery classes but once the centre is operating, the activities will be based on the interests of those attending. The Centre will also encourage the use of facilities in the community and support centre members who wish, for example, to go swimming, fishing, play golf or attend college.

Independent Living Skills

Sessions provided at the centre will provide life-skills training to help manage the essentials of daily living; from safe and effective methods of cooking and doing household tasks such as laundry, through to banking and personal care. A mock kitchen set up will allow members to learn new skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Vision Awareness Courses

Linburn Centre will develop and deliver short courses for members within commuting distance of the site. Individuals newly diagnosed with a visual impairment will get the opportunity to meet others in the same situation, learning about services in the community, benefits, grants, low vision equipment etc. Spouses/carers/partners/family will also be encouraged to attend.

This will be further developed with the introduction of residential training breaks to allow members living a distance from the facility, the opportunity to attend a more intense awareness course over one or two week blocks.

Information and Advocacy

The Linburn Centre will be the focal point for all members/carers/families from where they can access information (either in person or by telephone) on a range of topics and issues including eye conditions, treatments, welfare benefits, housing and adaptations along with support where necessary, and/or signposting to other relevant services. Centre staff will advocate on their behalf if/when required. The Centre will also carry a comprehensive set of information leaflets.
