Scottish War Blinded Centenary Event Programme

 

 

 

 

Scottish War Blinded was established to provide essential rehabilitation and vocational skills training to ever increasing numbers of soldiers returning to Scotland, with life changing visual impairments, as a result of the introduction of chemical warfare during World War One.

A century on, Scottish War Blinded not only supports veterans who have lost their sight in service, but also those who have developed significant visual impairments in subsequent later life. As membership has evolved, so have the services Scottish War Blinded provides building on the charity’s strong historical origins.

Scottish War Blinded celebrated its century of expanding for visually impaired veterans through a series of events and projects:

Centenary Exhibition

Archive material guided visitors through the development of Scottish War Blinded services from its beginnings at Newington House, moving through key historical developments, to the charity's present day services. The exhibition was held at Edinburgh's Central Library in November 2015. Read more

Blind Bowling Tour

Blind bowling was introduced to Scottish War Blinded members on the grounds of Newington House in 1916 which proved highly popular, inclusive and effective in promoting positive health and well-being and camaraderie. Scottish War Blinded visited six bowling clubs in 2015. Read more

WW1 Commemorative Tour

Scottish War Blinded members visited the Ypes Salient where, one hundred years ago, the first gas attacks attacks were launched by the German Imperial Army during the 2nd Battle of Ypres in 1915. Members also laid a commemorative wreath at the Menin Gate as part of the trip. Read more

Centenary Celebration Event

A celebratory event was held at the Linburn Centre on Thursday 10 December 2015 which included the chairty's AGM, celebration party as well as the official opening of the new centenary sports hall and four new bungalows by his grace, the Duke of Buccleuch. Read more
