A telephone service for families

Royal Blind staff are working hard to keep care home residents in touch with their families.

As per government advice, family visits to residents at Royal Blind’s care homes and residential units have been suspended.

This protocol protects care home residents because the risk of visitors unintentionally transmitting the COVID-19 virus to care home residents is removed.

“We are only allowing essential medical visits, such as a doctor, if a resident is unwell. The only people coming into Jenny’s Well are care staff, nursing staff and the activities team.

“Families have been quite understanding. They’re missing their loved ones, but that’s to be expected.

“The services are much the same, apart from that.”

Nicola, who is also a registered nurse, said a telephoning schedule has been set up.

This means families can phone in and chat with older residents in between nurses visit and meal-times.

“Families phone the reception in the morning and we’ve made an allotted time appointment where the activities staff will go to the bedroom and make the phone call,” Nicola said.

“The Activities staff are also helping residents write messages for us to share with their loved ones. We’ve had some very positive feedback from families.”

Nicola said Activity staff were keeping residents busy.

“They’re running quizzes for those who are happy to do it, reading the newspapers to them, and having a chat. It’s just whatever residents are wanting to do.”

“Everyone’s trying really hard to keep everything as normal for residents as possible.”
