Austrian influence at Kidscene Holiday Club

Few charities could manage without the enthusiasm, hard work and commitment of volunteers, and Royal Blind is no exception with its band of helpers taking on wide-ranging and important roles.

Julia (left) and Anna (right) at KidsceneAnna Thaller and Julia Almer are the latest voluntary recruits helping out at Kidscene After School and Holiday Club.

The two Austrian students attend HLW Sozialmanagement der CARITAS Graz, a college for social and economic occupations in Graz, Austria. The work experience at Kidscene forms part of their internship with both going into their final year after the summer.

Native German speakers, Anna and Julia are also fluent in English and Spanish. They’re enjoying building their confidence in English although our Scottish dialect sometimes causes a bit of head scratching.

This is their first visit to Scotland so have been doing some sightseeing with visits to Glasgow, the Isle of Skye, the highlands, North Berwick and, of course, Edinburgh. We’re pleased to report that they think Scotland is a lovely country but they’re not so keen on our weather!

Julia at KidsceneWorking with young children is not new as they have previous experience of volunteering in schools and kindergartens in Graz and Berlin. They’re being kept busy at Kidscene having helped with the After School Club and now the Summer Holiday Club which takes up to 30 children a day.

On the agenda this week was a trip to The Yard, always a popular Kidscene outing, there was mention of a mini tough mudder (photographs to follow!); swimming, Boogie Beats, Gruffalo crumble and more revolting recipes!

Next week they’ll have their work cut out with Minion Week and a packed plan of Minion themed activities. Take a look at our events programme to see what else is happening.Anna at Kidscene

We’ll catch up with Anna and Julia before they say goodbye to Kidscene and Scotland but meanwhile if you’d like to get involved with Royal Blind we have volunteer opportunities that can be carried out in your own time as well as roles based in our head office or one of our services.
