Student travels from Germany to Scotland to volunteer at 'amazing' Kidscene club

Student Savannah Seidl has reflected on her time volunteering at Royal Blind’s holiday club, Kidscene.

The 20-year-old travelled from her home in Bavaria, Germany, at the startSavannah Seidl outside Kidscene of July to give three weeks of her time helping care for children at Kidscene’s summer holidays club.

Savannah, who will go to University this year to study special education, said she was keen to shadow staff at the club after reading about the service online.

She said: “I was hoping that I would find a placement in Scotland because I have always wanted to visit.

“And when I was researching specialist services for children and young people I read great things about Kidscene.”

Savannah will return to Germany this week after completing her placement.

Her favourite thing about the placement, she said, has been watching the staff interact with children of a broad range of ages and abilities.

She said: “I have only done short placements working with children in the past and I have never worked with children with visual impairment or additional support needs.

“The best thing about working here is seeing how all the children play together and how the staff put such effort into organising different themed activities. The children get to go swimming at least twice a week, there are outside activities, there was a trip to the beach.

“One of the highlights for me was visiting The Yard Adventure Centre in Edinburgh.

“After taking part in this placement with Kidscene, I really feel I am pursuing the right career.”
