Our Vision for Equal Education

Today Royal Blind is launching Our Vision for Equal Education - a campaign to highlight the need for increased support in Scotland’s schools for blind and partially sighted pupils.

Our vision for equal education Up to 80% of our learning is through our vision and with a rising number of vision impaired pupils in Scotland, paired with falling numbers of specialist teachers, we believe action should be taken to prevent children and young people being left behind in their education.

Currently 88.8% of pupils with vision impairment go on to higher education, training or employment, compared with 94.9% of pupils without additional support needs.

Royal Blind is calling for action in four areas:

A Scottish Government Action Plan to recruit and retain the specialist teachers we need for increasing numbers of vision impaired pupils

A new SQA training qualification in vision impairment for education support staff and others including those providing care and therapy

Effective transitions for vision impaired young people

A fair and pupil-centred placement system for vision impaired young people.
