'A Veteran in his Studio'

Veteran of Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and prolific artist George Graham has presented an oil on canvas painting titled ‘A veteran in his studio’ to the team at the Hawkhead Centre, in thanks for the support received to continue painting.

The painting will be displayed in the centre, George said he’d decided to donate the artwork to celebrate the opening of the centre;

‘In thanks for the support I’ve received from everyone at Scottish War Blinded which has enabled me to pick up my paint brushes again. After my sight loss, I didn’t think it was possible for me to be creative again. The equipment which Scottish War Blinded has provided to me – including a scanner, and magnifier, have enabled me to continue producing a wide range of paintings using traditional techniques.’

George says;

‘I consider this to be a painting within a painting, it shows a self portrait, a painting within a painting of the sinking of HMS Sheffield during the Falklands War in 1982. Some people have interpreted the images of old friends as a vision like those Charles Bonnet syndrome can cause after you lose your sight, others have interpreted it as the nightmares which PTSD can inflict.’

George has some distance to travel to reach the Hawkhead Centre, yet is so enthusiastic about the potential for the art studio that he plans to travel from Dumfries at least once a month to visit and make use of the studio.

He says;

‘I’d like to support other veterans to get more involved in picking up art, I’ve learnt lots of techniques to help me paint despite my sight loss. Personally, I prefer to use oil on canvas, but I can help any fellow artist whatever they’re using.’ George will pass on these tips to help others get their confidence up.

George enlisted in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders as a boy soldier of 15, following a long family tradition. Having developed sight loss later in life he became a member of Scottish War Blinded in early 2016.
