Alex and Nikki Shand complete The Great North run in support of Scottish War Blinded

Alex and Nikki Shand recently ran The Great North Run in support of Scottish War Blinded. Alex describes their experience on the day and the reasons for choosing to support our charity.

"There was only one choice this year when it came to us selecting a charity. My wife’s (Nikki) Grandfather, Hugh Cassidy, sadly passed away earlier in the year, and Scottish War Blinded provided him and his wife with a great deal of support in the latter stages of his life.

"The small act of providing a short period of care to allow his wife to attend appointments, visit the shops or to simply grab a coffee with a friend made such a big difference to both of them as he became less mobile and was unable to leave the house.

"This was my second half marathon but Nikki, who is not a keen runner decided to tackle the Great North Run in Hugh’s memory. I wish we could say that we trained for months and stuck to a diet plan that would have matched Mo Farah’s, but I’m afraid that wasn’t the case. We did get some training in as the race drew in, but work, children and the dreaded summer break somehow seemed to absorb any free time.

"As race weekend arrived, the parents turned up to look after the children and blissful ignorance of what was to come kept the smile on Nikki’s face, where memories of sore muscles left me planning a day in bed on the Monday!

"On the day itself, the sun decided to make an unusual appearance in Newcastle just in time to raise the temperature to almost unbearable during the run. Thoughts of why we were doing the run and of what SWB could do with the money kept us going throughout and we both finished strongly. We were both just outside of our time goals, but smashed the important target, the fund raising. We set a target of £250 and at the time of writing this, we are over the £300 mark. The just giving page is of course still active for another couple of weeks and can be found by visiting

"Two days on and we still dread every step that we have to take, but the sore legs will recover, the blisters will heal and we will eventually rehydrate, but sadly the work for Scottish War Blinded will continue and we look forward to signing up again next year to raise some more money for a very worthy cause."

Keep smiling,

Alex and Nikki Shand

Our sincere thanks to both Alex and Nikki for their incredible fundraising efforts in support of Scottish War Blinded.
