Introducing the Veterans Gateway

Posted: 09/05/2017 | Scottish War Blinded

Scottish War Blinded is proud to announce our role in an expert network of organisations behind a new initiative to support veterans of the Armed Forces.

The Veterans Gateway has been launched to make finding the right support easier and quicker.

This is the first time a group of charities have come together formally to deliver such a service to benefit the Armed Forces community. A group of referral partners also back the service, allowing the Veterans’ Gateway to refer people to specialist organisations both within and outside of the Armed Forces sector.

With many organisations supporting the Armed Forces community, Veterans’ Gateway aims to be the first point of contact for veterans and their families who need support.

Rebecca Barr, Head of Development and Operations at Scottish War Blinded, said:

‘I’m delighted that Scottish War Blinded will be involved in this important initiative. Coping with sight loss can be very challenging, so it’s good to know veterans in Scotland who are facing life with a visual impairment will be referred to our team and will get help as quickly as possible.’

How does Veterans’ Gateway Work?

Their team of advisers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and many are veterans themselves. They assess people at the first point of contact, ensuring they are quickly referred to the organisation that is best placed to support them.

The helpline will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week: 0808 802 1212.

The advisors will assess people at this first point of contact, ensuring they are quickly referred to the organisation that is best placed to support them, such as Scottish War Blinded.

This could mean a veteran who has issues with their sight loss, but doesn’t know who provides specialist assistance in their local area in Scotland, will be referred to Scottish War Blinded. We can assist, no matter how or when their sight loss occurred.

Veterans’ Gateway also has an extensive Self Help service, allowing veterans to search for help and advice independently. It covers a range of support for veterans and their families, including housing, finances, employment and more.
