Scottish War Blinded member Tom Boal will raise funds for Scottish War Blinded by participating in the ‘Rat Race Dirty Weekend’ on Saturday 10 May 2014. Tom has taken time out of his busy training schedule to tell us how his preparations are progressing:

“Saturday 10 May 2014 will see me tackle the world's longest/largest Obstacle Race, known as the ‘Rat Race Dirty Weekend’.  A unique race which consists of 20 miles over 200 obstacles at Burghley House Estate, Stamford.

This is my biggest challenge to date; training for this event started exactly 9 weeks ago and it’s been enjoyable at times and exhausting in parts, but I think I am now ready for the real 'challenge'. At the start training was gym based working on my core and upper body strength plus interval training on the treadmill to build up my cardio levels.  Once the weather picked up it was time to head outdoors and get some serious running done.  I started running up to 5km and slowly building this up to 10km over various types of terrain.

In week 5, I decide to really push myself and do a 20 mile run which I completed in 4hrs 30mins. This will inevitably take slightly longer on the day as a result of queuing to tackle obstacles but I am aiming for 6hrs with the main objective being to finish.

Training over the final three weeks has been a combination of 5/10km runs and swimming preparing for the water based obstacle zone challenge....the mind boggles at what this zone will contain.

Reason for doing this is......I must be mad! No, seriously I wish to give something back to the Scottish War Blinded who have boosted my confidence in living with a visual impairment.  If you wish to support the on-going work that the Scottish War Blinded do please visit my justgiving page , all donations small or large very much appreciated.  Thank-you. Tom.”
