Scottish War Blinded Centenary Exhibition 2015

Scottish War Blinded will host its Centenary exhibition, titled ‘Scottish War Blinded: A Century of Expanding Horizons’, from 16-28 November 2015 at Central Library, Edinburgh.

In February 1915, Scottish War Blinded joined a National Advisory Committee established to support the increasing numbers of servicemen returning to Scotland from World War One with life changing visual impairments.

A hundred years on, Scottish War Blinded continues to support visually impaired veterans where many of its members now develop visual impairments in subsequent later life following time in the Armed Forces.

The first part of the exhibition describes the charity’s historical origins providing rehabilitation, training and employment at Newington House, Queen’s Crescent in Glasgow, Linburn House and Workshops in West Lothian.

In the second part, the exhibition describes current Scottish War Blinded services provided at the Linburn Centre and Outreach Service across Scotland in terms of rehabilitation, activities and social opportunities.

The exhibition will also feature a wide range of Scottish War Blinded artefacts including sports trophies, memorabilia, workshop products, archive footage and stories from Scottish War Blinded members, past and present.

Scottish War Blinded Marketing Manager Davina Shiell said:

“Scottish War Blinded services today has evolved considerably from its origins at Newington House and our Centenary exhibition provides an excellent forum to describe the various key developments in the charity’s history providing rehabilitation, training and social opportunities to visually impaired veterans.”

The exhibition is open to public and welcomes school and community interest touring groups. For further information, please call 0131 2291456 or email:

The exhibition is proudly sponsored by Imagineear, Media Education Ltd and Barr Printers.

“We at Imagineear are delighted to be working with Scottish War Blinded again as a sponsor for their upcoming exhibition. We have created a number of audio guides for visually impaired audiences, but working with an organisation solely dedicated to supporting ex-service men and women who have lost their sight is particularly rewarding.”

Barr Printers are proud to support Scottish War Blinded’s Centenary exhibition and to recognise its services provided to visually impaired veterans.”
