Archie Stewart became a member of Scottish War Blinded having served in the Royal Artillery during National Service in the 1960’s and developed Age Related Macular Degeneration in subsequent later life.

Archie is from Leven originally but now resides in Dunfermline.  He developed Age Related Macular Degeneration four years ago and was referred to Scottish War Blinded through a friend.

Scottish War Blinded member Archie StewartArchie said:

“I had no idea Scottish War Blinded existed and what they could do for me. I was visited by an Outreach Worker who talked me through membership and a short time later I made my first visit to the Linburn Centre.”

Archie has been coming to the Linburn Centre for a year now where he has re-discovered his passion for Art.

“I enjoy coming to the Linburn Centre, so-much-so I’ve asked if I can come along two days a week instead of just one. There’s a great social aspect too, everyone is roughly of the same age and experienced similar things in life.

"I enjoy working with David, the Linburn Centre Art Instructor, who has helped me to produce a range of paintings. I was interested in art when I was younger but coming here has really rekindled that interest. I also sketch and paint smaller pieces at home which is great as a means to practise techniques and ideas.”

Archie proceeded to talk through a wide range of artworks he has produced which included a number of pieces which focus on architecture, floral scenes and boats.

“Being a joiner I guess I have an eye for houses, boats, anything with an interesting structure. I enjoy experimenting with colour and various brush and sponge techniques and take inspiration from my own ideas, pictures and photographs.”

Archie will exhibit a number of his artworks at Scottish War Blinded’s event at the Linburn Centre in October for Luminate 2016, which is an annual festival celebrating creativity in later life.
