Scottish War Blinded Derek McDonald brought glitz and glamour to the Linburn Centre on Tuesday 23 February 2016 by taking part in the All Eyes on You challenge as part of Royal Blind Week 2016.

Scottish War Blinded is the sister charity of Royal Blind who run Royal Blind Week as its annual fundraising and awareness raising campaign. As part of this year’s campaign, the All Eyes on You challenge asks people to dawn lavish eye makeup for one day as a means to focus on the theme of vision.

Scottish War Blinded member Derek McDonald takes part in the All Eyes on You challenge for Royal Blind Week 2016Derek McDonald has participated in many fundraising challenges for Royal Blind including a recent abseil for the charity and describes how he found out about the All Ayes on You challenge.

Derek Said:

“I saw the advert on Facebook and thought ‘why not?’ It would certainly be something different to do in support of Royal Blind. Being of sober disposition and advancing years, I didn’t think that a gentleman like me would succumb to the lure of something like this.”

Linburn Centre Officer Caroline O’Hara helped Derek apply the make-up in the art room, which seemed the most appropriate room for such a task. As the ‘layers’ of make-up were applied, many members downed art brushes and model kits to take a closer look.

Scottish War Blinded member Tam Marshall said:

“It was definitely something I didn’t expect to see this morning and it’s certainly caused a buzz. Royal Blind is a great cause and I’m sure the challenge will help raise awareness and bring some funds in.”

Derek wore the make-up throughout the day at the Linburn Centre and described the reasons behind wearing the make-up to fellow members engaged in rehabilitation and activities as well as curious staff.

Derek describes his experience:

“It’s certainly been a new experience for me and I have enjoyed doing something completely different in support of Royal Blind. I don’t see it as career move as I think I’ll go back to abseiling off tall buildings to support Royal Blind in the future.”
