Scottish War Blinded members competed at the Scottish Association of Blind Bowlers Championships at Abbeyview Bowling Club on Saturday 14 March 2015.

Established in 1963, the Scottish Association for Blind Bowlers is a network of 12 member clubs across Scotland providing regular matches and social opportunities for visually impaired people.

The annual championship event brings member clubs together to compete in a round robin competition keenly contested by all involved.

Visually impaired bowlers utilise a clock system when bowling where directors provide information to the bowler in terms of proximity to the jack, angles and speed.

The Dunedin team proved the eventual winners and were presented with trophies produced by members at the Linburn Centre.

Scottish War Blinded’s has produced the championship trophies for the past two years recognising the sport as an important recreational activity during the charity’s century of expanding horizons for visually impaired veterans.

Scottish Association of Blind Bowling Chairman Jim Binnie said:

“It’s great to have Scottish War Blinded’s support in terms of producing trophies for the event. Both organisations provide activities and social opportunities to prevent members becoming isolated in the community and I hope we continue to work together in the future.”

Scottish War Blinded members Peter Ramsay and Hugh Maguire were amongst a number of members competing at the event.

Peter Ramsay, representing North Lanarkshire, said:

“It’s been a great day of competition with a mix of friendly banter. It’s my second year back after a break from bowling and delighted to be back.”

Hugh Maguire, pictured and representing West Lothian, said:

“It’s been tremendous, a really enjoyable day. Unfortunately we didn’t win but there’s always next year.”

Scottish War Blinded will embark on a series of tour matches versus Scottish Association of Blind Bowling teams across Scotland later this year. Tour schedule
