Scottish War Blinded will host an event titled ‘Creative Vision’ at the Linburn Centre on Saturday 24 October as part of the 2015 Luminate Festival. The Luminate Festival is delivered by Age Scotland and celebrates creativity in later life through a series of workshops, performances and exhibitions organised across Scotland every October.

Creative Vision will exhibit art produced by Scottish War Blinded throughout the Linburn Centre including portraits, landscapes, models and tactile art. Information cards will describe the inspiration behind the artworks as well as providing insight into the visual impairments our members experience as a result of time in service or in subsequent later life.

Scottish War Blinded member Derek O’Rourke will run workshops in the Linburn Centre art room and will invite visitors to paint using simulation specs as a means to develop an appreciation of painting with a visual impairment. Visitors will also have the opportunity to join members in the workshop and construct bird tables, bird boxes and rocking horses wearing simulation specs.

Derek O’Rourke said:

“I am really looking forward to the Luminate event at the Linburn Centre. The workshops I will run will demonstrate what can be achieved, no matter how old you are or if you have a visual impairment, and that the sky is the limit in terms of creativity.”

Scottish War Blinded celebrates it centenary in 2015 and visitors will have the opportunity to view the charity’s centenary exhibition which describes the key developments during its century of expanding horizons for visually impaired veterans in Scotland.

If you know a veteran of the armed forces who has a visual impairment sustained either in conflict or subsequently to their service, the event provides a perfect opportunity to learn more about the services Scottish War Blinded provides.

Linburn Centre Manager Jim Thomson said:

“The Luminate event at the Linburn Centre provides a perfect opportunity to provide visitors with an insight into the creative talents of our members. The centre would particularly welcome those who have an interest in the services Scottish War Blinded provides, or knows of a visually impaired veteran we can support.”

The event is free to attend and will take place from 10am-4pm. For further information, please contact Gary Seath on 0131 229 1456 or email
