Team Scottish War Blinded played their second centenary tour match at Whitehall Bowling Club in Aberdeen on Wednesday 6 May 2015.

The team included members from the charity’s Linburn Centre and Outreach services including Dennis Valentine, Bill Mackie, Ian Graham, Harry Murray and Agnes Reid.

Despite the unseasonal weather in the days leading up to the match, the bowling green was in pristine condition which was appreciated by all the players as they walked out into the light drizzle.

Whitehall Bowling Club made an exceptional start to the match with a wonderful display of accuracy and skill. It was clear that Team Scottish War Blinded would have to be on top form to win.

Team Scottish War Blinded made a valiant attempt to recover the situation with a number of fantastic shots converted to points on the scoreboard in the middle part of the match. However, Whitehall proved too strong for Team Scottish War Blinded emerging comfortable winners 25-16 at the end of play.

Despite the result and damp weather, the match was played in great spirits. In a cruel sense of irony, the sun eventually broke through the clouds as the players left the green providing everyone with a source of amusement.

For Scottish War Blinded member Agnes Reid, the match provided an opportunity to return to outdoor bowls at 93 years of age by delivering the opening bowl in the match.

Agnes said:

“It’s been a wonderful day and my first outdoor match in 19 years. I play indoor bowling every week but it was nice to be back on the green outside. Everyone at Whitehall Bowling Club has been very kind and it was a pleasant surprise to have the opportunity of opening the match.”

Scottish War Blinded member and former British and Scottish Visually Impaired Bowling Champion harry Murray said:

“It’s been a great opportunity to meet fellow members you wouldn’t meet otherwise as well as everyone here at Whitehall Bowling Club. It was my first match outdoors this season and although I’m a little rusty it’s been a great day out.”

Scottish War Blinded’s next tour match is at Abbeyview Bowling Club on Thursday 14 May 2015. The match begins at 11am and admission is free. Tour schedule
