We recently featured Tom's preparation for the Rat Race Dirty Weekend Challenge event and delighted to say that he has been back in touch about how he got on:

“My Rat Race Dirty Weekend has been and gone but what a weekend it was! 20 miles and 200 obstacles of mud, water and more mud! I arrived at Burghley House on Friday afternoon to pick up my racepack, campsite pass and a can of Red Bull; was that a sign of what lay ahead?

Tom Boal Raises Funds for Scottish War BlindedHeading over to the campsite you pass the start/finish line and you could see the biggest monster of an obstacle called the 'Final Furlong', at 19.9miles. This consisted of a climb up three 8ft walls stacked on top of each other and down the other side, hence the can of Red Bull!!

Saturday arrived and the first wave started at 08.00. My start time was 10.30am........contributing to a mixture of excitement and nerves.  As soon as the race starts you are presented with the initial obstacle including hay bales to climb up an over and cars to crawl through.  This run isn’t for the faint hearted, all manner of obstacles are thrown at you, water crossings up to your neck, jumps from 20metres and water slides from 50metres.

I spent the day running, crawling, carrying and scaling obstacles leaving on the Final Furlong to negotiate. It took 20 minutes to conquer but I made it past and reached the finish in a time of 7 hours and 40 minutes......this was a lot harder than expected, but was an awesome challenge.  Oh and I have signed up for next year’s race......must be mad!

Thank you to everyone for your donations; my just giving page closes on Tuesday 10 June 2014 if you would like to donate and support the great work Scottish War Blinded does:
