Veterans enjoy once in a life time experience with Spitfire in Cumbernauld

Linburn Centre Officer, Tim Searles had heard that a Spitfire was going to be operating out of Cumbernauld Airport for a couple of weeks in August and thought a trip to see it would be a good way for Scottish War Blinded to commemorate the centenary of the forming of the RAF.

After making a few enquiries, he contacted the owners and made special arrangements for some of our members to enjoy the opportunity of a life time to get up close and personal with the Spitfire and its crew.

When the group went up to see the rare TR9 Spitfire they were given a hands on experience of the aircraft as well as being up close enough to feel the power of the engine when it took off. The aircraft they saw was originally a single seat Mk 9 Spitfire that flew 9 operational sorties before being converted to a two-seat trainer with full dual controls.

Many thanks go to Tim and the team at Cumbernauld Airport for organising this trip. It was an day our members will always treasure. Below are just some of the truly wonderful things members of this trip had to say!

Bryce Campbell:

"The whole day was absolutely fantastic, the company was great, the craic was good and the whole experience was five stars plus, especially when I got to fulfil the dream of a lifetime by touching a Spitfire. I’ve got models of the two most beautiful airplanes in the world; Concorde and the Spitfire at home so it was great to actually touch a Spitfire! I’ll never forget the unbelievable sound of that Rolls-Royce Merlin engine as she taxied past and then took off in front of us – unforgettable!"

Ted Barnes:

"The lovely Spitfire visit to Cumbernauld took me back to the roar of Spitfires when I was in the RAF. It was wonderful to hear the sound of the Merlin Engine once again. I really enjoyed the whole day and the company of Bob, Frank, Bryce and the rest of the team – I can’t say how pleased I am."

Frank Mabbutt:

"I had a super day at the airport. Tim Searles and John Kerr were excellent hosts and really looked after all of us. I also made some friends. My thanks to all for a great day out."

Ken Simpson:

"As someone who spent three years building the real thing, it was fantastic to get up close with an airworthy, working Spitfire. It was an excellent day out, well spent in good company and I’m very grateful to Tim for organising the trip."
