World War One Remembered: Alexander (Sandy) McDonald

Scottish War Blinded member Derek MacDonald provided an excerpt describing his Grandfather Alexander McDonald's service on the Locon Sector earning the Military Medal in 1917.

“The Locon Sector was never an easy one, because it was frequently dosed with gas, but in patrol work the 2nd Royal Scots had the advantage of the enemy, and on the 15th July Lieut. Somerville with Lance Corporal A. MacDonald, Sergeant Fraser, and Privates McIver and Wilson silently crawled through a belt of corn and captured four Germans. A rumour having arisen that the enemy had abandoned some of his front posts, the Royal Scots, on the 5th of August sent forward patrols during daylight to establish contact with the enemy; but there had been no evacuation, and two men were killed and one wounded before this was discovered.”
