STEM CELL TRIAL BOOST FOR BLIND

Express.co.uk today reports that blind and partially-sighted people have been given new hope after British scientists got the go-ahead for a trial of revolutionary stem cell treatment. Experts at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London will test the therapy within weeks. They will inject cells derived from human embryonic stem cells into the eyes of 12 patients with an incurable inherited eye condition, Stargardt’s macular dystrophy. The disease, which affects around one in 10,000, causes gradual loss of central vision.

Paralympic Games ticket prices and competition schedule

The Paralympic Games full competition schedule and ticket prices have been released. Please note this schedule is subject to change. Full price tickets start at £10. Special prices are available in all sessions (except the Opening and Closing Ceremonies) for young people aged 16 or under at 29 August 2012 and seniors aged 60 or over at 29 August 2012. Paralympic Games tickets for young people and seniors will cost just £5. Special prices are available for wheelchair users in all sport sessions.

Our Deputy Matron Swims the Channel

Our Deputy Matron Morag Francis has set herself a personal challenge to swim the channel in her local pool. This is no easy task as it is a 22 mile swim or 1402 lengths, which she is hoping to complete within 12 weeks. Morag is putting herself to the challenge to raise £2,000 in order to buy a specialist chair for Braeside House.

Libby Clegg driven by gold medal dream at London 2012

Former pupil an Paralympic sprinter Libby Clegg is hoping to go one better than her silver medal from Beijing three years ago and win gold in London 2012. The BBC today reports that the 21-year old, who has a degenerative eye condition meaning she only has slight peripheral vision in her left eye, will compete in the T12 100m and 200m events for the visually impaired.  Read the full story here.
