Royal Blind School celebrates exam success

Students at The Royal Blind School are benefiting from innovative online programmes for Intermediate, Higher and Advanced Highers that help students with visual impairments. The SCHOLAR programme, developed by Heriot-Watt University, has already helped 16-year-old Saad achieve A-grades in his Intermediate maths exam. The Royal Blind School pupil is now pursuing Higher maths and physics with the help of SCHOLAR’s materials, a unique resource available to all Scottish students.

The Doran Review website and Peter Doran's blog have now gone live. Every child has the right to become a successful learner, confident individual, effective contributor and responsible citizen - wherever their learning is taking place. Some face barriers to learning and need additional support to enable them to make the most of their educational opportunities and to realise their potential.

Visually impaired residents enjoy listening to their favourite melodies with singer Rose McBeth

Residents, staff and family gathered together today at Braeside House to watch a performance by singer Rose McBeth. During the performance the audience sang along to some of their favourite melodies ranging from Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley to Petula Clark and Vera Lynn. Commenting on the performance, Rose said: "I try to mix and match the songs as much as possible so that everyone enjoys the performance. It's a pleasure to visit Braeside House and a joy when residents sing a long.

Crush help to fundraise for Royal Blind

A combined effort of successful fundraising was seen between the Royal Blind and Crush last week. The ‘Kicks for Kids’ fundraising event took place at the Hibernian Football Club , which has played a significant role in local communities; from establishing a disability football team to providing educational support in their Learning Centre. Like all charities, Royal Blind rely on the support of individuals and companies, such as Crush, who can dedicate both time and money to the cause.

A team of researchers is developing an implantable bionic chip, especially designed to return sight to victims of retinal degenerative diseases

Chris Shaw of www.newelectronics.co.uk reports that CSEM, an R&D centre specialising in micro and nanotechnology, is collaborating with medical research Nano-Retina on an ultra small, high resolution and easy to implant artificial retina. According to the researchers, the bionic retina incorporates a range of nano size components in one tiny implant that compensates for the damaged tissue without the need to operate.

Phone Review has reported that ‘when it comes to touch screen technology it excites us when a new patent has been put forward, and that is exactly what Microsoft has done.
