Demand for better health communication for blind

The Scotsman (30 Sept) reports that communication between blind people and health services has to improve following the release of a damning charity survey. The Scottish study found that only one in ten blind or partially sighted people receive crucial information in a format they can understand. Remember in Scotland The Scottish Braille Press is the leading provider of high quality alternative formats such as Braille, Large Print and Audio.

Take part in the very first Glow in the Park sponsored walk

A lot can be achieved in one hour and for Light Relief Week 2010 (30th October - 5 November) we are asking families to use the hour gained when the clocks go back to light up the lives of many who live in the dark. To celebrate the launch of week we are organising the very first Glow in the Park children's sponsored walk around Edinburgh city's West Princes Street Gardens. The event will take place on Saturday, 30 October we are looking for children to take part.

Stem cell study offers hope for hereditary blindness condition

Bio News is reporting that researchers have successfully transplanted retinal cone cells into blind mice, making progress towards a stem cell treatment for a form of blindness that causes degeneration of the eye's retina. The research team, from the University College London Institute of Child Health, isolated immature photoreceptors – light-sensitive cells – from the developing retina. They transplanted these cells into the eyes of adult mice with Leber's congenital amaurosis, a form of degenerative blindness.

Ian Rankin has been a huge supporter of Royal Blind and it is an honour that his event has been shortlisted in these prestigious awards. Award ceremony taking place on 9 September at the newly opening Grand Central Hotel, Glasgow. Fingers crossed!
