Current Activities

This year we are celebrating National Braille Week in the following ways: 

125 Years of the Scottish Braille Press 
Philip Caveney at the Royal Blind School

- An exhibition celebrating 125 years of the Scottish Braille Press at the Central Library in Edinburgh will allow visitors to explore the history of braille and the Scottish Braille Press, with a unique display of braille machines and equipment. 

Braille Signage 

- Waitrose, Morningside, will display a special braille welcome sign, at the front of the store to celebrate the week

- Caffe Nero, the Merlin, Lucas and Cafe Fresco, in Morningside, will offer braille menus supplied by the Royal Blind School

Author Event

- Children's author, Philip Caveney, led a creative writing workshop at the Royal Blind School. 

Grassmarket Reception 

- A reception celebrating braille and alternative formats will take place in the Grassmarket, Edinburgh, on Tuesday, featuring performances from Royal Blind School students, an exhibition of students' artwork and a reading from childrens' author, Philip Caveney. View a gallery of the event here. 

Music Video 

- Students from the Royal Blind School, residents of Forward Vision and members of the Linburn Centre joined forces to create a music video, Thank You for the Music - a cover of the Abba hit. 

History of the Scottish Braille Press

- A history of the Scottish Braille Press will be released to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Scottish Braille Press. 

#SpotTheDot

- A social media campaign to #spotthedot where supporters are invited to raise awareness of braille and alternative formats by taking photos of braille they see in their day-to-day lives.
