Waitrose to display Braille welcome sign as part of National Braille Week

Visually impaired shoppers at an Edinburgh supermarket will be welcomed to the store in Braille this week as part of a campaign to raise awareness of alternative formats.

Students of the Royal Blind School today unveiled the specially designed ‘welcome’ sign at their local Waitrose to kick-start National Braille Week.

The Braille for the sign was produced just around the corner from the supermarket at the Royal Blind School in Canaan Lane and students, Harry and Junjie, visited the store for the grand unveiling.

National Braille Week, a campaign organised by sight loss charity, Royal Blind, will take place from 10-16 October. The campaign aims to raise awareness of Braille and alternative formats, like large print and audio.  

Katie Wilkinson, Department Manager, said she was ‘delighted’ with the new addition to the store. 

She said: “I’m very pleased that our branch is celebrating National Braille Week. We are really keen to support projects within the local community and with the Royal Blind School just on our doorstep, we thought it would be a great opportunity to get involved with a great local cause.

“The sign will be on display throughout National Braille Week here in store and I am really looking forward to working with Royal Blind to get a permanent Braille sign in the near future.”

Royal Blind School students undergo Habilitation training at the supermarket as part of their studies, learning how to navigate the store and use its customer services department.

The school has also produced Braille menus for Morningside cafes and pubs, Caffè Nero, S. Lucas, The Merlin and Deli Fesco.

Royal Blind School students will distribute the menus throughout the week and they will be available to Braille-reading customers upon request.
