The Royal Blind School is the only national special school for visual impairment in Scotland and aims to be a leader in educational and habilitation practice for visually impaired children and young people.
We have a strong history and heritage and were founded in 1835. We are run by the charity Royal Blind.
We are a national grant aided special school. We are funded through a Scottish Government grant, fees from local authorities or privately funded places, as well as donations made to Royal Blind. Please make a donation today to support our work.
We offer both day and residential places and can educate and care for pupils of all ages. We have a pe-school playgroup once a week, and can support school age children at any stage in their education. We have an after school and holiday club, Kidscene, on our premises that caters for children with and without disabilities. Our follow on service, Forward Vision, provides residential care for young adults that need it up to the age of 25.
We offer opportunities for children attending other schools to experience the school for periods from one day to several months. This gives young people with visual impairment the opportunity to socialise with a range of visually impaired peers and to access specialist services such as assessment, Braille instruction, habilitation training and to access technology in the supportive and expert environment of the Royal Blind School.
Special schooling offers visually impaired pupils the opportunity of full participation in school life, a curriculum fully tailored to individual needs and the experience of working alongside a mutually supportive peer group. This is a valuable experience for a number of pupils for all or a part of a school career and their educational achievement and acquisition of daily living and mobility skills is much enhanced. Many local authorities are unable to provide this kind of facility themselves.
In 2013-14 we are under-going a re-development programme and our two campus will be merging into one. The changes will see all pupils educated and cared for at the Canaan Lane campus in Morningside in Autumn 2014. Find out more.
