Scottish War Blinded member John Moffat recalls attacking the Bismarck in 1941

Scottish War Blinded member John Moffat recalls attacking the Bismarck in 1941

Scottish War Blinded member John Moffat was recently honoured at Scone Aerodrome in recognition of his service in the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm during World War Two. John was greeted by a guard of honour, flew in a special fly-by and was presented with a replacement set of campaign medals which he had lost over the years.

John famously flew in the Swordfish squadron which attacked the Bismarck in 1941. The torpedo John released from his biplane is credited with striking the Bismarck’s rudder which led to the British Navy catching up with the destroyer and sinking her in May 1941.

We visited John, who recently celebrated his ninety-sixth birthday, to learn more about his mission to attack the Bismarck and the recent event held in his honour.
