Alan Smith recently joined Scottish War Blinded who participated in National Service from 1947 to 1949 in the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. Alan learned about his eligibility for Scottish War Blinded membership after a visit to an opthalmic specialist.

WWI Commemorative Drumhead Service

Venue: Edinburgh Castle

Drumhead Services are a tradition which goes back centuries, conducted in the field both during armed conflict and peace time. It replicates services, often conducted on the front line, where neatly piled drums draped with appropriate colours create a makeshift altar.

Scottish War Blinded Member Returns to Normandy for 70th Commemorations

Scottish War Blinded member Hugh Maguire attended the recent 70th anniversary commemorations in Normandy including a return to Sword Beach, visits to war cemeteries and attend the remembrance service at Arromanches.

Hugh was a 24 year old Lance Corporal who landed on Sword Beach with the 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles on D-Day.

Scottish War Blinded Members Invited to WWI Commemorative Drumhead Service at Edinburgh Castle

Scottish War Blinded members are invited to attend a World War One commemorative drumhead service at Edinburgh Castle on Sunday 10 August 2014.

The event will mark the start of the Scottish commemorations programme which will remember eight events from World War One that had a significant impact on Scotland. They include the start and end of the war, major battles including Jutland and Gallipoli and domestic incidents such as the Quintinshill rail disaster and the loss of HMY Iolaire.
